Avraham vs. Job

Hi,

What differences do you see between Avraham's declaration below, and Job's?

"Rabbi Levi said: Two men said the same thing, Avraham and Job.

"Avraham said (Bereishit 18:25, regarding the destruction of Sodom), 'It would be a disgrace for You to do something like this, to kill the righteous with the wicked.'

"Job said (Job 9:22), 'It is all one, thus I have said: Complete and wicked, he destroys.'

"But Avraham was rewarded, and Job was punished! For Avraham said something mature; Job said something underripe."

Jerusalem, City of Justice

Hi,

Introduction: The word tzedek refers to justice.

"Jerusalem makes its residents just – [its biblical leaders were named] Malki Tzedek (Genesis 14), Adoni Tzedek (Joshua 10). Jerusalem itself is called tzedek, as in Isaiah 1:21, 'Righteousness would reside in her.'"

A punishment for lashon hara

Hi,

"Rabbi Levi said: In the future, Gd will place idolaters into Gehennom, challenging them, 'Why did you persecute My children?'

"The idolaters will reply: It came from them! They would come to us and speak harmfully [lashon hara] about each other!

"At which point Gd will place both in Gehennom."

Mordechai learned from Yaakov, Yosef and Daniel

Hi,

"[When considering whether to warn wicked Achashverosh regarding the plot against his life, Mordechai said:]

"Yaakov blessed Pharaoh as in Bereishit 47:7, 'And Yaakov blessed Pharaoh'.

"Yosef revealed the future to Pharaoh.

"Daniel revealed the future to Nevuchadnezzar.

"I will do likewise.  And so Esther 2:22 says, 'And he told Queen Esther.'"

The Miracles of Yosef and Mordechai

Hi,

"Rabbi Yudin cited Rabbi Binyamin: The sons of Rachel [Yosef and Mordechai] share the same tests and power.

"The same tests:
·         Bereishit 39:10 "And when she spoke to Yosef daily." Esther 3:4 "And when they spoke to him daily."
·         Bereishit 39:10 "And he did not listen to her." Esther 3:4 "And he did not listen to them."

"The same power:
·         Bereishit 41:42 "And Pharaoh removed his ring." Esther 8:2 "And the king removed his ring."
·    Bereishit 41:42 "And he put it on [vayiten] Yosef's hand." Esther 8:2 "And he gave it [vayitnah] to Mordechai."
·      Bereishit 41:42 "And he clothed him in linen garb." Esther 6:9-11 "And the garb and horse shall be given… And Haman took"
·        Bereishit 41:42 "And he placed [vayasem] a gold brooch on his neck." Esther 8:2 "And Esther placed [vatasem] placed Mordechai over the house of Haman."
·        Bereishit 41:42 "And he drove him in his viceroy's chariot." Esther 6:11 "And he drove him in the streets of the city."

·      Bereishit 41:42 "And he called before him, Avrech" Esther 6:11 "And he called before him, 'So shall be done, etc.'"

Manipulation through anger

Hi,

"G-d angered masters upon their servants to elevate the righteous – 'Pharaoh became angry at his servants' to elevate Yosef.

"[G-d angered] Servants upon their masters to elevate the righteous – 'Bigtan and Teresh became angry' to elevate Mordechai."

(Midrash, Bereishit Rabbah 88:3)

[And to this we might add Daniel 2:12.]

Why did G-d destroy the land in the Flood? Part 2

Hi,

"'Behold, I will destroy them with the land.'
Rav Huna and Rabbi Yirmiyah citing Rav Kahana bar Malchiya: Even the three handbreadths of earth that the plow affects were melted.
  • This may be compared to a prince who has a tutor; when he acts badly, his tutor is struck.
  • And to a prince who has a nursemaid; when he acts badly, his nursemaid is struck.
"So Gd declared: 'Behold, I will destroy them with the land,' I will destroy them, and I will destroy the land with them."

Why did G-d destroy the land in the Flood? Part 1

Hi,

"Rabbi Azaryah cited Rabbi Yehudah bar Simon: Everything corrupted its deeds in the generation of the Flood. The dog went to the wolf, the rooster went to the peacock, and thus Bereishit 6:12 says 'for all flesh had corrupted'. It does not say 'all of Man had corrupted', but 'for all flesh had corrupted.'

"Rabbi Luliani bar Tavrin cited Rabbi Yitzchak: Even the land strayed; they planted wheat and it produced an alternative zunin form of wheat. Our great zunin are from the generation of the flood."

Betzalel's Destiny

Hi,

"Moshe said: To whom shall I instruct? Gd said, 'I will show you.'

"What did Gd do? He brought the book of Adam [see Bereishit 5:1 and Bereishit Rabbah 24:2] and showed Moshe all of the generations which would arise from the beginning until the Resurrection of the Dead, each generation and its kings, each generation and its leaders, each generation and its prophets. He told Moshe: I established each from that initial moment, and I established Betzalel, too, from that moment. This is the meaning of, 'See, I have called the name of Betzalel.'"

Divine regret

Hi,

"A heretic asked Rabbi Yehoshua ben Karchah: Do you not say that Gd sees the future? He replied: Yes.

"The heretic asked: But Bereishit 6:6 says, "And He was sad in His heart!" He replied: Have you ever had a son?

"The heretic said: Yes. He asked: And what did you do?

"The heretic said: I was glad, and I made everyone glad! He said: But did you not know he would ultimately die?

"The heretic said: At a time of joy there is joy, at a time of mourning there is mourning. He said: So, too, for Gd…"

Reasons for mitzvot, Part 2

Hi,

"Rav said: The mitzvot were given only to refine Gd's creations. Does Gd care whether one slaughters from the front or back of the animal's neck? The mitzvot were given only to refine Gd's creations."

Walking with Gd

Hi,

"Noach walked with Gd"
Rabbi Yehudah and Rabbi Nechemiah [debated]:
  • Rabbi Yehudah said:
    • This may be compared to a noble who had two children, one older and one younger. He told the younger, "Walk with me," and he told the older, "Come walk before me."
    • Avraham was strong, "Walk before Me and be complete." Noah was weak, "Noah walked with Gd."
  • Rabbi Nechemiah said:
    • This may be compared to the king's friend, who was sinking in thick clay. The king spotted him and said, "Rather than sink in clay, walk with me!" So it is written, "Noah walked with Gd."
    • To what may Avraham be compared? To a king's friend, who saw the king walking in dark streets. The friend spotted this and began illuminating the path, from his window. The king looked and saw him and said, "Rather than shine for me from a window, come shine before me!" So Gd said to Avraham, "Rather than shine for Me in Mesopotamia and her surroundings, come shine before Me in Israel!"

Noach was righteous "in his generations"

Hi,

"In his generations"
Rabbi Yehudah and Rabbi Nechemiah [debated]:

  • Rabbi Yehudah said: In his generations he was righteous – but were he in the generation of Moshe or the generation of Samuel, he would not have been righteous.
    • In the neighbourhood of the blind, they call the one-eyed man "of sufficient light";
    • This may be compared to one who had a cellar of wine, and who opened one barrel and found it to be vinegar, and then a second, and then a third which he found to be off. They told him, "This is off!" To which he replied, "Is there any better?" And they said, "No."
    • So, too, in his generations Noah was righteous, but were he in the generation of Moshe or of Samuel he would not have been righteous.
  • Rabbi Nechemiah said: If in his generations he was righteous, then had he been in the generation of Moshe or the generation of Samuel, how much more so!
    • This may be compared to a jug of persimmon oil sealed tightly and placed among graves, and yet its smell wafts out. Were it away from the graves, how much more so!
    • This may be compared to an innocent girl living in the neighbourhood of zonot without having a bad reputation. Were she in the neighbourhood of the righteous, how much more so!
    • So, too, in his generations Noah was righteous, how much more so were he in the generation of Moshe or the generation of Samuel.

How old was Avraham when he recognized Gd?

Hi,

"R' Yochanan said: Anyone regarding whom "he was" is stated, was righteous from start to finish.

"They challenged him: Ezekiel 33:24 says, "Avraham was one, and he inherited the land!" Was he then the same at the start of his life and at the end?

"R' Yochanan replied: This does not break it; R' Levi said, citing Reish Lakish, that Avraham recognized his Creator at the age of three.

"R' Chanina and R' Yochanan both said that Avraham was 48 when he recognized his Creator. What do we do with "he was"? He was suited to lead the world in repentance."

Noach and Nature

Hi,

"When Gd created Adam the First and empowered him over all, the cow listened to the plowman and the furrow listened to the plowman; when Adam sinned, they rebelled against him… Until Noach arose, water rose and flooded them in their graves…"

The message of "Noach"

Hi,

5"These are the generations of Noach, Noach"
This is perplexing! It needed to state only, "These are the generations of Noach, Shem!" But rather:

  • Relief for him, relief for the world;
  • Relief for ancestors, relief for descendants;
  • Relief for the upper realms, relief for the lower realms;
  • Relief for this world, relief for the next world.

A doubled name

Hi,

4"These are the generations of Noach, Noach"
Rabbi Abba bar Kahana said: Whenever a person's name is doubled, he has a portion in this world and the next.

  • They challenged him: Bereishit 11:27 says "Terach, Terach," so does that mean he has a portion in this world and the next?!
    • He replied: This does not break the idea.
    • As R' Yudan cited R' Abba bar Kahana:
      • Bereishit 15:15 says, "You [Avraham] will come to your ancestors in peace." He informed Avraham that his father would have a portion in the next world.
      • Bereishit 15:15 says, "You will be buried at a good age." He informed Avraham that Yishmael would repent.

A righteous person makes the world go around

Hi,

1"These are the generations of Noach; Noach was a righteous man, complete"
  • This is the meaning of Mishlei 10:25, "When the storm passes, and there is no wicked person, and the righteous person is an eternal foundation."
    • "When the storm passes, and there is no wicked person" – This refers to the generation of the flood.
    • "And the righteous person is an eternal foundation" – This refers to Noach.

  • Mishlei 12:7: "Overturn the wicked and they will not exist, and the house of the righteous will stand."
    • "Overturn the wicked and they will not exist" – This refers to the generation of the flood.
    • "And the house of the righteous will stand" – This refers to Noach.

  • Thus it says, "These are the generations [product] of Noach."

Alternatively: "These are the generations of Noach"
  • Mishlei 14:11: "The house of the wicked will be destroyed, and the tent of the righteous will flower."
    • "The house of the wicked will be destroyed" – This refers to the generation of the flood.
    • "And the tent of the righteous will flower" – This refers to Noach.

2Alternatively: "These are the generations of Noach"

  • Iyyov 24:18: "He is swift upon the face of the water, their portion is cursed in the land, he will not turn to the path of the vineyards."
    • "He is swift upon the face of the water" – It was decreed that they would be destroyed with water.
    • "Their portion is cursed in the land" – As if to say: "May the One who punished the generation of the flood." And why so much?
    • "He will not turn to the path of the vineyards" – They intended nothing other than to plant vineyards.
    • But Noach intended otherwise, only to bear fruit and multiply in the world, and to produce children, as it is written, "These are the generations [products] of Noach."
