Piety trumps Torah knowledge

Hi,

"R' Shimon and R' Elazar were sitting together, when R' Yaakov bar Acha approached.

"R' Elazar said to R' Shimon, 'Let us rise before him, for he is someone who piously fears sinning.

"R' Shimon replied, 'Let us rise before him, for he is a man of Torah.'

"R' Elazar said back, 'I told you he is someone who fears sinning, and you reply that he is [merely] a man of Torah?!"

(Talmud, Shabbat 31b)

Food for thought on July Fourth

Hi,

"Rabbi Yehudah, Rabbi Yosi and Rabbi Shimon were sitting together, with Yehudah ben Gerim. Rabbi Yehudah began to speak: 'How fine are the deeds of this [Roman] nation! They established markets, they built bridges, they built bathhouses!'

"Rabbi Yosi was silent.

"Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai replied: 'All that they built, they built only for their own needs. They established markets to make a place for women of ill repute; they built bathhouses to pamper themselves; they built bridges from which to collect taxes.'

"Yehudah ben Gerim reported their words, and the report was heard by the government. They said: [Rabbi] Yehudah who praised should be elevated; [Rabbi] Yosi who was silent should be exiled; [Rabbi] Shimon who insulted should be executed."

A reason for destruction: Low salaries for teachers of Torah?

Hello,

"It is written (Yirmiyah 9), 'Who is wise, who will understand this? Why is the land lost? HaShem declared: Because they abandoned the Torah.'

"R' Shimon bar Yochai said: If you see cities uprooted from their places in Israel, know that they did not properly reward teachers of Tanach and Mishnah."

May we soon see the rebuilding of the Beit haMikdash,

Rain and Pre-destination

Hi,

"Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said: When we merit, rain falls on the plants and trees and seeds, and the world is blessed. When we sin, rain falls in seas and rivers. In any case, the quantity of rain will always be as dictated by Gd."

(Midrash Tanchuma, Miketz 1)
