"Abba Chilkiyah was the grandson of Choni haM'agel [who was known for success in praying for rain]. When the world needed rain, the sages sent a messenger to Abba Chilkiyah, he would pray, and rain would come.
"Once they needed rain and sent a pair of rabbis to Abba Chilkiyah, to ask him to pray for rain. They went to his house and he wasn't there. They went into the fields and found him hoeing the fields. They greeted him, but he didn't turn to face them."

"They later asked Abba Chilkiyah, 'When we greeted you, why didn't you turn to us?' Abba Chilkiyah responded: I was hired as a day laborer, and I didn't want to stop working [as that would be cheating my boss]."

Delayed payment
Hi,
"The sages taught:
"From the fact that the verse (Leviticus 19) stated, 'Do not let the payment of an employee's work sleep with you,' I can already see that one is in violation [of the law against withholding payment] if he waits until the next morning.
"Then why did the Torah add, 'until morning?' To teach that the violation is a one-time violation, on that first morning.
"What happens after that? Rav said: One is in violation of a separate prohibition against withholding payment.
"Rav Yosef asked: What is the scriptural source for this additional prohibition? It is written [Proverbs 3]: 'Do not tell your friend, 'Go and return tomorrow, and I will give it to you,' when you have the payment there now.'"

The importance of paying employees on time
Hi,
On the importance of paying employees in a timely manner, regardless of the amount of money involved:
"Rav Asi taught: Even if one hires a person only to harvest one bunch of grapes, [and he holds the wages,] he has trespassed against 'Do not keep the salary of a laborer with you until morning.'"
(Talmud, Bava Metzia 111b)
