True humility

Hi,

"There are four elements in humble behavior:
a. Functioning in a humble manner;
b. Bearing one's own embarrassment patiently;
c. Fleeing from honor;
d. Treating others with respect."

(Mesilat Yesharim [Path of the Righteous], R' Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, Chapter 23)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. "Functioning in a humble manner"?

    I suspect "in a humble manner" might be rendered "humbly." But what exactly is the sense of this phrase? Doing things humbly, doing humble things?

  2. Grammar -
    I'm not sure of that. The Hebrew is בהתנהג עצמו בשפלות.

    Ramchal goes on to spell out steps in one's speech, gait, and other behaviors. I'd recommend reading the text.
