The sanctity of Jerusalem

"Why do I say that in the Beit haMikdash and Yerushalayim the initial sanctity lasts for the future? Because their sanctity was a result of the presence of the Shechinah, which cannot be nullified. The sages said: It is written, ‘And I will destroy your sacred areas’ - Even when they are destroyed, they remain in their sanctity."
