Why is Torah study different from other intellectual pursuits?

Hi,

"The conditions which must accompany Torah study are (1) awe of the Torah, and (2) constant self-improvement.

"The power of Torah study exists only because Gd made His influence dependent on it... Otherwise, speaking about Torah would be no different from speaking about any business or any book of wisdom."

(Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, Derech HaShem (Path of Gd) 4:2)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. I wondered, to what extent, this describes a hashkafah that is more aligned with one stripe of orthodoxy than another. More to the point, how free is one to dismiss this notion that our Torah study "brings down Gdliness" into the world? Does it, in any way, put one out of the pale of orthodoxy?

  2. I wouldn't consider this an ikkar emunah - but I would recommend reading the full section in Derech HaShem.
