"Rava taught: A person is not punished for his reactions in a moment of pain."
(Talmud, Bava Batra 16b)

I have been sending out daily Torah Thought emails since 1997. I created this blog to provide an archive for, and a forum for discussion of, these emails.
All points of view are welcome in this forum, if expressed civilly (as defined by my ear, since this is my blog). However, this is not a place for publicizing personal manifestos; feel free to start your own blog for those.
If I recall, Rava says this as an understanding and forgiveness for Job’s blasphemy, just as we should be understanding of mourners and other sufferers in our day.
ReplyDeleteStill, I would love to know the definitions of “reactions”, “moment”, and “pain” in Rava’s lesson. They are all such personal issues and require much sensitivity and understanding.

ReplyDeleteTrue; all of this requires much greater elaboration, and each case is unique.
